Interplay & NATE Partner for Advanced HVAC Training

Interplay Learning has partnered with North American Technician Excellence (NATE) to offer advanced, remote HVAC training through micro-learning modules directly linked to NATE’s new Certified HVAC Professional (CHP-5) alternative certification pathway, which features shorter, topic-focused exams designed to modernize and expand technician certification amid skilled labor shortages.

HVAC training receives a significant advancement as Interplay Learning, a leader in virtual reality and simulation-based training, partners with North American Technician Excellence (NATE), the leading HVACR certification organization in North America.

Austin, TX, July 8, 2020 – North American Technician Excellence (NATE) and Interplay Learning are collaborating to connect remote HVAC training with a new, alternative certification pathway for technicians.

With a growing shortage of skilled labor in the U.S., further exacerbated by the global pandemic, traditional training programs are struggling to meet the industry's demand for skilled workers. The partnership between Interplay Learning and NATE—leaders in skilled trades online training and HVACR certification, respectively—marks a step forward in modernizing training for the trades. Doug Donovan, CEO of Interplay Learning, states, “We are very excited to be partnering with NATE to help the HVAC industry train technicians more safely and effectively with online learning.”

Interplay Learning's platform is built around the “micro-learning” format, which is now directly linked with a NATE credentialing program. These are available as preparatory classes for NATE’s new certification program. Anthony Spagnoli, NATE Director of Testing and Education, notes, “Offering remote online learning with a direct pathway to certification gives us an opportunity to modernize and expand.”

NATE’s new alternative certification pathway, Certified HVAC Professional (CHP-5), allows users to attain NATE certification through shorter, topic-focused exams. The CHP-5 consists of a series of short, 30-question exams on functional areas of the trade, providing an alternative to the longer, more comprehensive CORE and Specialty exams. Both programs cover the same material, but the new offering provides technicians with a more flexible path to training and certification.

This collaboration is possible because Interplay Learning’s job-relevant virtual technical training aligns with NATE’s goal to measure on-the-job competency. Both organizations emphasize that the intent is not to replace hands-on training, but to offer a learning model that promotes skill advancement and measurement. Doug Donovan adds, “This flexible model supports hands-on training efforts and makes that time more valuable and efficient.” He explains, “In a simulated training, you can practice hundreds of in-the-field scenarios in one session that might take years to see in the field.” 3D simulations and VR-based training reinforce and add to hands-on training, resulting in job-relevant skills that pave the path to certification.

Through the micro-learning format, Interplay’s accessible online training empowers technicians to advance their careers. NATE’s matching CHP-5 certification exam series enables technicians to build skills and earn credentials at a faster rate than traditional pathways.
